Meet Murgamma: she lives in Bangalore, southern India, and is a mother of three. Her husband’s poor health prevents him from working so Murgamma took his place as a stonemason, breaking rubble from morning to evening—a difficult and dangerous task that pays $2/day.
In 2011, Good Neighbors India offered her a loan and she has since been able to open her own food stand and sell delicious Indian snacks, earning up to $8/day. “I am very happy now,” she tells us. “I can let my children have a better education with what I earn.”
